The artists of Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative will present an opportunity to try a historic Korean printmaking method, TAK-BON. It is a printing process used to record and preserve patterns, textures, and designs. With this technique we will transfer the texture of an object by dampening a thin piece of mulberry paper and tamping it with a dauber or mungchi.

The print image will be used to make

a lovely greeting card to take home!

Massillion Museumm Massillion Ohio

top left to right works by: Saari, Steele, Morton, and Cushman

Opening: Sunday, November 1 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

This exhibition will highlight printmaking - specifically women printmakers who are associated with one of four independent cooperatives in the state of Ohio. A wide range of styles and techniques will be shown from:

Phoenix Rising (Columbus)

Tiger Lily Press (Cincinnati)

Dayton Printmakers Cooperative (Dayton)

Zygote Press (Cleveland)

The cooperatives were chosen because of their independent structure and non-affiliation with a local college or university. The artists were chosen to represent the wide range of work being produced despite the shared environment.

Featured Phoenix Rising Artists include:

Anne Cushman, Cindy Davis, Rebecca Morton, Eliana Calle-Saari, Judith Steele, Stephanie Sypsa and Joan Tallan.

The Massillon Museum receives funding from the Ohio Arts Council and Arts in Stark.

August is Monotype Month at Phoenix Rising!
August 15, 19, 22 -- 3 Different Workshops, 3 Artists
Celebrate Summer by making a colorful print!

Monoprinting with Paper Stencils
Saturday, August 15
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Artist: Joan Tallan
Participants might like to bring paper cutouts of photos or drawings of natural objects or geometric designs. Thin paper such as computer paper or tracing paper work best. Our final results will be gloriously colored printed compositions.
Class fee: $40. per person (materials included)

Monotype by Tallan

Painterly Monotypes
Wednesday, August 19
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Artist: Anne Cushman,
Using the "subtractive" method once practiced by Degas, both black and white and color inks will be used to create painterly monotypes.
Class fee: $40. per person (materials included)

Easy Monoprint With Watercolors
Saturday, August 22 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Artist: Cindy Davis
This class provides an easy way to transform a favorite photo into an original work of art. Bring an 8-1/2” x 11” color image that we will place under a plexiglass plate. After tracing a few outlines with a crayon, you simply fill in areas with watercolor, and then print the plate on our press. The crayon lines stay white and keep the paint from running, making this kind of watercolor painting as easy as a coloring book! The result is an exciting new piece, not a copy of your photo.

The vibrant colors and lacy white lines of your print may have a different character from your original image, but it's easy to capture the charm of a Summer moment in a print you will enjoy making, and treasure always!
Class fee: $40. per person (materials included)

AUGUST CRITIQUE -- Sunday, August 30; 2:00 pm
Bring newly finished art or "works-in-progress” for sharing and helpful discussion.
No charge
