August is Monotype Month at Phoenix Rising!
August 15, 19, 22 -- 3 Different Workshops, 3 Artists
Celebrate Summer by making a colorful print!

Monoprinting with Paper Stencils
Saturday, August 15
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Artist: Joan Tallan
Participants might like to bring paper cutouts of photos or drawings of natural objects or geometric designs. Thin paper such as computer paper or tracing paper work best. Our final results will be gloriously colored printed compositions.
Class fee: $40. per person (materials included)

Monotype by Tallan

Painterly Monotypes
Wednesday, August 19
10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Artist: Anne Cushman,
Using the "subtractive" method once practiced by Degas, both black and white and color inks will be used to create painterly monotypes.
Class fee: $40. per person (materials included)

Easy Monoprint With Watercolors
Saturday, August 22 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Artist: Cindy Davis
This class provides an easy way to transform a favorite photo into an original work of art. Bring an 8-1/2” x 11” color image that we will place under a plexiglass plate. After tracing a few outlines with a crayon, you simply fill in areas with watercolor, and then print the plate on our press. The crayon lines stay white and keep the paint from running, making this kind of watercolor painting as easy as a coloring book! The result is an exciting new piece, not a copy of your photo.

The vibrant colors and lacy white lines of your print may have a different character from your original image, but it's easy to capture the charm of a Summer moment in a print you will enjoy making, and treasure always!
Class fee: $40. per person (materials included)

AUGUST CRITIQUE -- Sunday, August 30; 2:00 pm
Bring newly finished art or "works-in-progress” for sharing and helpful discussion.
No charge

Sidney Chafetz is a Columbus treasure. A professor emeritus of Ohio State University, Mr Chafetz is so beloved by past students that they formed a printmaking alumni association in his honor called the "Residivists". Other notable achievements include numerous national and international awards and fellowships as well as foundation and university research grants. In 1991 he received the Ohio Arts Council’s Governor’s Award.

Sidney Chafetz, professor emeritus of art at The Ohio State University, received his professional training at the Rhode Island School of Design, L’Ecole des Beaux Arts, Fontainbleu, the Academie Julian, Paris, and with artists Fernand Leger and Stanley W. Hayter. He is been regularly represented in major print exhibitions since 1947.

His notable achievements include numerous national and international awards and fellowships as well as foundation and university research grants. In 1991 he received the Ohio Arts Council’s Governor’s Award.

A comprehensive 40-year retrospective of Mr. Chafetz’s work was organized by Ohio State in 1988, an event marked by the publication of Chafetz Graphics: Satire and Homage the first joint project of the University Galleries and the Ohio State University Press.

In 1992, Mr. Chafetz completed work on Perpetrators,a series of lithographic portraits of the individuals who carried out the policies of the German Third Reich, plus related installations. The exhibition toured scores of university and nonprofit galleries and traveled to three European cities. The series is now on permanent display at the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg. It is also regularly exhibited under the auspices of the Tennessee Center for Holocaust Studies. Several portraits from the series are at the University of Minnesota’s center for genocide studies.l

In the fall of 2005, the Columbus Museum of Art presented an exhibition of Chafetz prints covering the major areas of his interest: politics, cultural heroes and the academy.

Artist Talk With Joan Tallan

Beach Scene, by Joan Tallan

Artist Gallery Talk Series
Wehrle Gallery, Wednesday at Noon,
Free and Open to the public

October 15th

Artist Joan Tallen will lead us in a gallery talk entitled "War and Peace:Blood, Gore and some Fun"

Artist statement:
I am a people watcher. I observe the people I work with, play with, and see in the media. I am fascinated by the episodes that make up their lives.
Portraying people at their activities, from memory, life, or with the help of photos forms the content of most of my work. I also love flowers. I have a garden, but that is second to people.
The wood of a woodcut, and the copper and acid of intaglio influences the line and movement of the composition.

Our printmaking cooperative is celebrating its 10th anniversary! We are the only Columbus area fine art printmaking facility outside a university setting. Since 1998, the cooperative has been dedicated to enriching the cultural climate of the Columbus area through education and exploration of printmaking media and providing a well-equipped studio for artists and students.

Through support of a Franklin County Neighborhood Arts Grant and in coordination with the Ohio Dominican University, an exhibition of etchings, monoprints, relief prints and collagraphs by current members and past members will be on exhibition to celebrate 10 creative years. Over 15 artists will be participating.

The exhibition will also feature the debut of the cooperative’s Alphabet Book, the most recent member print exchange. This print collection will be presented in an artist book format, a limited edition of 20 handmade books.

In addition, 5 gallery talks by members will be presented and are open to the public on consecutive Wednesdays at noon. A variety of workshops for will also be offered promoting innovative print techniques, printmaking instructions for teaching professionals and a professional practices clinic for college students.

The cooperative will host a special artist visit from Sid Chafetz at the cooperative on Sunday, October 19 at 2:00 pm. One of our early advocates, nationally & internationally renowned printmaker Sid Chafetz will share his story and entertain your questions.
